CHILDREN’S ISSUES ADVOCACY IN AAUW MD
Select a “Phase” for your branch’s interest and plan your work that benefits children. Phase I - BOOKS FOR MD HEAD START Phase II - LET’S GO TO OUR SCHOOLS. Phase III - PUBLIC POLICY FOR CHILDREN Phase IV - ENGAGE IN SERVICE PROJECTS
Recommended reading lists for donations to Head Start and for on-site reading programs. * IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE PHASE I: Your branch needs a person to contact the nearest MD Head Start Grantee office to let them know you will be delivering pre-school books from your AAUW MD branch. Contact Jacqui Thorpe (jacqulynt8@aol.com) to get the updated contact information. Make contact, set a date for delivery and tell your State Chair. * MOVE INTO PHASE II: Visit a place where children are gathered in your community and find out what they need that AAUW MD can provide. Decide what you can do and tell your State Children’s Issues Chair so that your work can be publicized. * EMBARK ON PHASE III: If you are more legislation minded, talk about public policy issues that concern children and decide how your branch can make a difference. What are some trends in schools? Is home economics going to make a come back in public school? Can viewing a movie start a discussion? Will digital tablets replace textbooks? * ENGAGE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS IV: If you just want to do a one time type project that affects and/or helps children in your community, look for ways to help. Can you do a disability related project that would benefit children? Or, start a “ Knitting With Purpose” of “Crocheting With Purpose” group in a branch and make scarves, hats, etc. for infants and young children. Select an organization that serves that age group and donate your gifts.
